Offshore, the ocean always has surprises in store! With year-round whales, the Kona Coast is a premier wildlife destination. From deep-water cetaceans to playful dolphins along the coast, this week brought one exciting sighting after another.

The stars of our tours were undoubtedly the pilot whales. Our first encounter came in deep water where a small pod of seven adults greeted us. Among them were two enormous bulls whose size immediately stood out. The whales were relaxed and curious, allowing for exceptional views as they surfaced around the boat. One individual even rose vertically from the water in a dramatic spy hop, offering a glimpse of its inquisitive nature.

To the south, we encountered another pod. This group included a tiny calf traveling alongside the adults, and several whales treated us to energetic tail slaps as they socialized at the surface. Watching multiple generations interact within the pod provided a fascinating look into the strong social bonds that make pilot whales such captivating animals to observe.

Adding to the excitement, a small oceanic shark was seen traveling with the second pod! While only making brief appearances, it offered a unique reminder of how many species share these offshore waters. Encounters like this highlight the complexity of the pelagic ecosystem, where predators, cetaceans, seabirds, and countless other marine species occupy the same vast expanse.

As we neared the coast, guests embraced the playful energy of a pod of Hawaiian spinner dolphins. A social pod near Keauhou provided excellent views as several individuals rode the bow and interacted around the vessel. Another closer to town, also gave everyone an opportunity to enjoy their acrobatic behavior and effortless movement through the water.

Between our variety of encounters, we hope our guests left with lasting memories. We’ll be back on the water tomorrow, the 25th, and 27th this coming week for our 8:30 AM pelagic tours!
