Whale & Wildlife Report | June 7- 13, 2026
We explored Kona’s inshore and offshore waters on our pelagic tours and guests were treated to an exceptional diversity of marine life! Multiple species of whales, dolphins, and a surprise whale shark!!
The standout sightings were undoubtedly the melon-headed whales. One trip encountered the largest pod ever recorded by the crew, with an estimated 500 or more animals spread as far as the eye could see. The whales were resting and traveling slowly, creating a massive but tranquil scene offshore. On another day, a pod of approximately 150–200 melon-headed whales was found mixed with hundreds of Fraser’s dolphins. As usual, the melons were highly social, providing excellent views and showcasing the species’ characteristic curiosity around the boat.
Dolphin activity was equally impressive throughout the trips. Vast numbers of spotted dolphins were encountered, with several hundred animals spread across the area alongside large flocks of hunting ʻiwa birds and schools of tuna. The dolphins provided excellent surfing and wake-riding opportunities around the vessel.
Spinner dolphins were also seen on the way offshore, while one exceptional encounter featured 200–300 Fraser’s dolphins mixed with melon-headed whales. In a behavior rarely observed by the crew, the Fraser’s dolphins spent time bow-riding and performing spectacular aerial leaps, adding an extra level of excitement to an already wildlife-rich day.
Pilot whales were another highlight, appearing on multiple trips. One smaller pod was split into two groups, allowing for prolonged, great observations as they moved slowly north. On a later outing, a pod of pilot whales was actively foraging, making repeated probing dives while leading us into deep waters.
Complementing these cetacean encounters was a remarkable whale shark sighting. We estimated the whale shark to be only about 10 feet long. The wonderfully curious shark stayed close to the surface, circling and following alongside for an extended period, providing rare and unforgettable views of the world’s largest fish.
More memorable days are on the horizon! Join our next 8:30 AM pelagic tours on June 19th & 21st.
