The humpback season has begun which means we just wrapped up our pelagic whale watching season! Whale watching on the Kona Coast is year-round and we love spending time with Kona’s wide variety of marine life. Our team is stoked to reveal that we saw whales on 99% of our pelagic whale watching tours in 2025! Curious about what we saw? Keep reading for our species round-up…

We Encountered 9 Whale Species

  • Short-finned pilot whales (94 pods!!)

  • Sperm whales

  • Blainville’s beaked whales

  • Cuvier’s beaked whales

  • Longman’s beaked whales (one of the rarest whales in the world)

  • Melon headed whales

  • Pygmy killer whales

  • Pygmy sperm whales

  • Humpback whales (20 unique individuals during the pelagic season)

And 5 Types Of Dolphins

  • Hawaiian spinner dolphins (80 pods!)

  • Pantropical spotted dolphins

  • Bottlenose dolphins

  • Rough-toothed dolphins

  • Fraser’s dolphins

We Saw 10 Different Shark & Ray Species

  • Oceanic white tip sharks (24 sightings!)

  • Tiger sharks

  • Scalloped hammerhead sharks

  • Smooth hammerhead sharks

  • Mako shark

  • Oceanic Black tip shark

  • Whale sharks

  • Pelagic manta

  • Reef manta ray

Other Species Included…

  • Hawaiian monk seals

  • Green sea turtles 

  • Hawksbill sea turtles 

  • So many birds!
