Whale & Wildlife Report | Dec 7-13, 2025

This week on the Kona Coast delivered an unforgettable mix of pelagic surprises, seasonal humpbacks, and lots of marine life action. From rare offshore encounters with sperm whales to to playful dolphins greeting us day after day, our tours were filled with memorable moments that showcased just how dynamic and alive these waters are right now.

Towering blows on the horizon signaled an incredible surprise and the perfect grand finale to our pelagic whale watching season - sperm whales!! It had been quite some time since our last encounter with this awe-inspiring species, and the stoke level on board was electric. We were treated to great views of a group of six sperm whales as they repeatedly surfaced around us. These ocean giants never cease to amaze!

This week we enjoyed more early humpback arrivals on the Kona Coast! We observed several juvenile and adult whales, often staying for multiple surface intervals. Highlights included numerous looks at flukes, tail slaps, and several spectacular cartwheels! Our first official 2.5-3 hour humpback whale watch yesterday included two rewarding humpback encounters despite some stronger wind and current. We’re excited that the humpback activity seems to be ramping up!

Our mornings often began with Hawaiian spinner dolphins outside the harbor mouth. The fish pens are always a fun stop on our tours and we noted bottlenose dolphins hunting, including one encounter where an individual peeled off to come say hello! Offshore, the energy ramped up even more as we encountered pods of Pantropical spotted dolphins, charging through the waves, launching high into the air, and lighting up the ocean with their speed and agility. A few even surfed our bow and rocketed through our wake. This species is always a favorite of our guests!
