Whale & Wildlife Report | May 18-24, 2025
This week we got to spend some quality time with two of our favorite resident species! We had multiple encounters in the offshore waters of Kona with Short-finned pilot whales as well as encounters with Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins closer to Kona’s beautiful coastline.
We found pilot whales everywhere we explored this week! Each day we search different depths for various wildlife and this week the pilot whales spanned from the shallowest end of the pelagic zone out to the depths miles offshore. Each pod we encountered gave us the opportunity to observe different behavior. From curious individuals spy hopping to pods on the move searching for their next meal. Some of our trips even encountered multiple pods of pilot whales in one day!
While searching in waters closer to shore we found pods of Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins on every trip this week. Not only did we see spinner dolphins on every trip this week but we saw two pods on every trip!
We witnessed a variety of different behavior as well as different sized pods this week. Some were deep in their resting phase as they are a nocturnal species but others were still feeling energetic, engaging in social behavior and bounding around. We also saw the spinning behavior that makes them so famous!
