Whale & Wildlife Report | March 1-7, 2026

The first week of March was filled with humpback whales! Our Humpback Whale Watch and Adventure Whale Watch Tours explored the Kona Coast where we encountered numerous whales and a variety of captivating wildlife. While the humpback season comes to a close at the end of March, the action remains strong with plenty of whales in the area!

This week, our whale watching tours delivered multiple heat run sightings! The competition among male humpbacks reached an electrifying intensity with head lunges, jaw snaps, powerful dives, and some truly wild maneuvers and dives. Adding to the spectacle were occasional acrobatic breaches, impressive cartwheels, and pec slaps.

We were especially excited to spot and identify one of the standout participants as “Lure” (CRC-20868), a well-known humpback frequently documented in British Columbia waters during the summer feeding season.

Longer periods of downtime between surfacings created perfect opportunities to deploy our research-grade hydrophones. Our guests were able to immerse in the hidden symphony unfolding beneath the waves! Male humpback whales have been in full voice this season delivering this year’s tune with impressive intensity. What makes them truly awe-inspiring is their incredible reach: the ability to travel vast distances underwater allowing melodies to echo for miles. Getting to listen to these songs on our tours is always a highlight!

Our tours had fantastic dolphin encounters this week! We noted a pair of humpbacks booking it inshore with a pod of bottlenose dolphins in hot pursuit. Further north, we encountered large pods of Hawaiian spinner dolphins charming us with their incredible leaps and spins. A few came over to ride the bow of our boat as well! Offshore from the airport, we also found bottlenose dolphins hunting around the fish pens and reef manta rays feeding in the current lines. We’re ready for another fun week of whales and wildlife!
