Whale & Wildlife Report | March 15-21, 2026
Spring has sprung and we’re soaking up our humpback encounters on the Kona Coast! With the end of the humpback season approaching, every trip is an extra-special experience. We’re still seeing lots of whales in the area and other year-round species!
During the winter, the ocean is alive with activity! We saw an energetic comp pod of five whales doing head lunges and bubble blowing. Another individual, who we identified through Happywhale as PWF-NP_0639, was making a statement with big breaches, cartwheels, and peduncle throws. All the commotion even attracted other whales to the area to investigate!
We were intrigued by one whale who had curious markings on their head - maybe an injury that has healed? Especially between the males, competition can be intense. It is the breeding season after all, and not every whale comes out unscathed.
On St. Patricks Day, luck was on our side and we had an awesome encounter with a mom and calf duo! These two spent a lot of time on the surface and the calf was very curious. Mom also surprised us with a massive breach off our bow. Tons (literally) of pure power right before our eyes!
While waiting for a humpback whale to surface, we were shocked to come across an absolutely massive group of reef manta rays! There had to have been 20-30 in the area surface-feeding. The mantas stole the spotlight and we found ourselves surrounded by these fascinating giants. Such a cool sight!
It almost doesn't feel like the humpback season is coming to an end yet with our recent encounters. The whales are here and better weather is on the way! If you need one last humpack-fix, join us on a trip before March comes to a close.
